Taking on your first employee

When you start employing staff, which can include paying yourself a salary as a company director, you'll need to register as an employer with HMRC before your first payday. You can't register more than two months before you start paying people, and HMRC sends your employer PAYE reference by letter, so it pays to plan ahead. Our guide to setting up PAYE and payroll walks through everything to do before your first employee starts.

Before someone starts work, you'll also need to check they have the right to work in the UK, and most employers must have Employers' Liability insurance. Each new employee should receive a written statement of their terms of employment from their first day, and our HR service can prepare employment contracts for you.

What we handle each pay run

  • PAYE Income Tax, National Insurance and pension calculations
  • Real Time Information (RTI) submissions to HMRC
  • Payslips for every employee
  • Starters and leavers
  • Workplace and occupational pension contributions
  • Year-end payroll reporting

Workplace pensions

Your pension duties start from the day your first employee starts work. Staff aged between 22 and State Pension age who earn at least £10,000 a year and normally work in the UK must be automatically enrolled, with a minimum total contribution of 8% of qualifying earnings, at least 3% of it from you as the employer. Workplace and occupational pensions are part of our payroll service.
