Who needs to file a Self Assessment tax return?
You'll need to send a Self Assessment tax return if, for example:
- You were self-employed as a sole trader and earned more than £1,000
- You were a partner in a business partnership
- You had to pay Capital Gains Tax
- You had to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge and don't pay it through PAYE
You may also need to file if you had untaxed income, for example from renting out property, savings, investments or dividends. Being a company director doesn't on its own mean you have to file, but many directors do because they receive dividends. Our Self Assessment guide covers the rules in more detail.
Key Self Assessment dates
- 5 October: register for Self Assessment if you need to file for the first time for the tax year that ended on 5 April
- 31 October: deadline for paper tax returns
- 31 January: deadline for online tax returns and for paying the tax you owe
- 31 July: second payment on account, if you make them
Payments on account
If your last Self Assessment bill was £1,000 or more, you'll usually make two payments on account towards the next year's tax, each half of the previous year's bill, due by 31 January and 31 July. You don't have to make them if you paid more than 80% of your tax outside Self Assessment, for example through PAYE. Payments on account can come as a surprise the first time, so we explain them clearly and help you plan your cash flow around them.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax has started for sole traders and landlords. It applies from April 2026 if your qualifying income is over £50,000, from April 2027 if it's over £30,000, and from April 2028 if it's over £20,000. It means keeping digital records and sending quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software. Our Making Tax Digital guide explains what's changing.

Personal Tax: common questions
The deadline for online tax returns, and for paying the tax you owe, is 31 January after the end of the tax year. For the 2025/26 tax year, that's 31 January 2027. Paper returns are due by 31 October.
Not automatically. Directors usually need to file if they have income that isn't taxed through PAYE, such as dividends above their allowances. If you're unsure, we can check for you.
Advance payments towards your next tax bill, each half of the previous year's bill, due by 31 January and 31 July. They usually apply if your last bill was £1,000 or more, unless more than 80% of your tax was paid outside Self Assessment.
There's a £100 penalty as soon as you miss the filing deadline, even if you owe no tax, and further penalties the longer the return is late. Late payment penalties and interest are charged on tax paid late.
