When do you need to register for VAT?
You must register for VAT if your VAT taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000, or if you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. The 12-month test is a rolling one, so it's worth checking every month as you approach the threshold.
You can also register voluntarily below the threshold. That can make sense if most of your customers are VAT-registered businesses and you want to reclaim VAT on your costs. Our guide to VAT registration and VAT returns explains the rules in more detail.
VAT return deadlines
- Most businesses submit a VAT return every three months
- The deadline to submit and pay is usually one calendar month and 7 days after the end of the period
- You must submit a return even if there's no VAT to pay or reclaim
- Your payment must reach HMRC by the deadline, even if it falls on a weekend or bank holiday
Making Tax Digital for VAT
VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and submit VAT returns using software that works with Making Tax Digital. We prepare and submit your returns so they're fully MTD-compliant, and review your records to reduce errors and risk. On our plans, your subscription to Xero, QuickBooks or KashFlow is included, along with setup and training.
Choosing the right VAT scheme
- Flat Rate Scheme: if your VAT turnover is £150,000 or less (excluding VAT), you pay HMRC a fixed percentage of your turnover instead of working out the VAT on every purchase
- Cash Accounting Scheme: if your estimated taxable turnover is £1.35 million or less, you pay VAT when your customers pay you rather than when you invoice
- Annual Accounting Scheme: if your estimated taxable turnover is £1.35 million or less, you make advance payments and submit one VAT return a year
Whether a scheme saves you time or money depends on your costs and your customers. We advise on the right scheme for your business, and keep that advice under review as your business changes.
